The story shows that in coming together, we are not only empowered, but our differences become our individual strengths. ![]() By offering up some of our own comforts, we are able to create a new, shared experience. Without fear or xenophobia, as our young witch shows, we can make space and accommodate others of difference. There is plenty of space in our tradition for inclusion, and as we continue to expand our circle, we are strengthened. There will ALWAYS be room on the proverbial broom for others. Applying this story to modern witchcraft, you can take away an equally powerful moral. I love positive portrayals of the classic witch, especially when its in a format geared towards children and one that offers a powerful message. This story is surprisingly beautiful, a little cheesy, and solidly moving, all in under 30 minutes. Each adding a particular, unique object of their own to the cauldron, they create a new, luxury broom built specifically for the needs of each animal. The witch, along with her familiars, concoct a spell. With some quick thinking, she has a better solution. After she recovers, the witch and her cat face a harsh reality-they must leave the new companions behind, as there is no room on a broken broom. The witch is then pursued by a dragon, but long story short, the familiars rally together and as a unified group help protect her. Her kind nature and desire for inclusion of others saves her.Įventually, the broom snaps under the weight and the crew falls to the ground. While the cat is resistant to making room on the broom for the new companions, the witch insists. Much to the cats chagrin and with typical feline apprehension and cynicism, the witch invites each new familiar onto her broom. ![]() The animals collectively help to rebuild her witch identity, as they locate her magical belongings. She comes across a dog, a bird, and a frog. The witch and her cat land each time to look for her missing items, which have already been found by another cutesy animal.Įach of the animals, interestingly, is a traditional familiar. First its her hat, then her wand, so on and so forth. As the witch and her cat are flying around, she carelessly drops her possessions. She travels around by broomstick, and is intrinsically good natured and humorously clumsy. With a long ginger braid, she wears a pointy hat, and has a traditional magic wand and cauldron. The witch portrayed is of the classic archetype. Without the over-complications of plot or backstory, kid’s books are concise and powerful, probably in an attempt to brainwash them in as few words as possible. Children’s books are able to cut to the point and convey strong morals in a way adult media is just not able to do. Originally a British children’s book by Julia Donaldson, it was converted into an animated film in 2012, getting a nomination for Best Animated Short Film at the Academy Awards in 2014. The beautiful story of “Room on the Broom” is about a young witch and her cat who travel the countryside. ![]()
